Tivo no longer offers new lifetime subscriptions. Pre-existing ones are still good and are eligible for a transfer to a new series 3 for a limited time.
In order to make use of your series 1 box you can go to Tivo’s website (www.Tivo.com) and become a monthly subscriber to their service. The cost is 12.95/month. There are other options available that reduce the subscription amount if you commit for a longer time period. Check their website for the details.

The best deal for a sub now from tivo that will give you a free year when you buy two in advance. ($299 for 3 years).
If you have an older series 1 it might be able to record without a sub. if your series 1 cant do this it might be worth getting the dual tuner new for $69 and then prepaying the $299 for 3 years of service.
