Do you know if/how a TiVo series 2 can be used without the subscription?

I know that the TiVo series 1 can be used without the subscription — but is there a ***** or hack to get a TiVo series 2 to be used without their monthly subscription?
I bought this item of WOOT.COM and they refuse to accept the return (will never shop with them ever again) and am struck with it
Thanks in advance!

good luck with that.
i have a subscription to direct tv, and got a used box from a garage sale. they tried to charge me for someone else’s pay per view stuff.
be very very careful.
So why the heck were you buying a TiVo if you weren’t going to use the TiVo service??!!
ACTUALLY, the answer is: YES, you CAN use the TiVo without subscribing to the TiVo service, but its going to work more like a VCR than what TiVo really does so badassedly when you activate it properly.
You can set it up and go in and MANUALLY program the times and channels you want it to record, and it WILL record those shows at those times. You’ll just have to do that kind of programming more often, and you won’t be able to use the “Season Pass” functionality, which records that same show whenever its on (even on syndicated re-runs for example, if you wanted to).
So, get friendly with your new TiVo. Its still an amazing piece of entertainment electronics!
Just know that its not going to be like in the commercial until you subscribe: Your TiVo won’t “get you” until you “get” it.
Got it?
Good.
Enjoy. And let me know how it goes.
As you stated the Series 1 Tivo Standalone units could be used this way but the Series 2 Tivo Standalone Units CANNOT. Rod P is incorrect on this situation (Unless he is referring to the DirecTV Tivo Series 2’s, they can be used without the subscription for viewing recorded shows ONLY, NOT recording as a VCR.). Check out these links to the EXACT same question from a Tivo Upgrade Sites:
If you are looking for just a DUMB Digital VCR then I would suggest getting/Using a S1 Tivo instead. I believe it needs to have an old version of the software for this to work also, but this I could be wrong about.
RockRatt is CORRECT: I know for sure that “Series 2 Tivo Standalone Units CANNOT.” take that to the bank
