Buying a direct tv tivo off from eBay, a good idea?

direct tv tivo
Lataf Airam asked:

My R10 Tivo based directv receiver was giving me glitches (freezing every 10-15 mins), i called Directv and were unable to resolve the problem.
they offered to send a replacement unit. I received an R15 Direct tv plus which I’ve previously owned. I returned it in the pass ‘couse it would not let me record.

Can I fix my old unit by doing those drive upgrade kits they sell online? (many people claim my problem is a bad drive)

Can I buy a unit from eBay without a card and use it with my own old card? or do I need to buy a new card?

What if the one i buy from ebay comes with a new card, will direct tv activate it without questions?

All the help will be greatly appreciated

no, if you buy a reciever off ebay you need too get the card number and reciever number from the seller before you buy. then call dish or dirctv too make sure there is no bill do, or you will be responsble for the bill before they will activate the system. as far as the upgrade you should be able too receive that from the company through your satalite system. if you need too replace the reciever your better off taking there extended warranty and they will replace for free or little cost.

It sounds like a drive to me. I would recommend weaknees.com for your new drive. I had the same issue and was very happy with their product, service and innitial help with determining the problem and solution. They will send you a new drive that is formatted fopr your tivo and ready to go. They also include detailed instructions that should get you through the whole process in less than 10 minutes. (no, i don’t work for weaknees).
