The History Of Internet TV And How It Is Changing Broadcasting
July 28, 2007 by admin · Leave a Comment
Internet TV IPTV stands for Internet protocol television which many people prefer to call Internet personalized television. ABC’s World News program was the very first television program to be broadcast over the Internet in 1994.
If you never heard of IPTV, you are not alone as many people do not know what it is, even though they might already have experienced a taste of what it is. In simple terms, it is a television service that users subscribe to so that they can receive television shows on their TV that is connected to an Internet protocol network via a broadband or DSL connection. Most people have digital or satellite television now and have the ability to watch videos on demand. The cable or satellite company provides a list of videos that the user can choose to watch. The movie will begin to play when the user selects it. It is called video on demand because the consumer gets to select when they want to watch the movie, unlike with regular network television where the viewer doesn’t get to decide when they will watch a program. The viewer must watch the program when the network airs it or must make provisions to video tape or TiVo the show to watch at a later date. Video on demand is a tiny taste of what internet tv is about, but it is so much more than that.
internet tv programming combines video, data and voice services and while this is not a new idea, it is finally and idea that is ready to go viral. Now that technology is moving forward with leaps and bounds, providing a service fusing all three into one service is a reality. Broadband and DSL provide a high speed pipe through which the data can be sent. In the past internet access was very slow and could not reasonably transmit audio and video in a quick enough way to be beneficial. Technological advances with broadband and DSL have changed the scope of what is possible. Subscribers to web tv would have to have a box attached to their broadband or DSL Internet connection so that the programming can be received via the television. The box is similar to those that are installed by cable companies.
The term IPTV was coined in 1995 by a company called Precept Software. The company engineered and created a software application that could transfer audio and video over the internet using an Internet Protocol. The application was designed to offer distance training solutions for businesses. Precept Software was acquired Cisco Systems in 1998. Cisco was looking to integrate streaming video with network management technology to create a network platform for delivering high-quality video over IP. Cisco still owns the rights to the IPTV trademark, and is considered a big palyer in the internet tv arena.
Audionet is an Internet radio company that began broadcasting news content from several television stations in 1998 featuring continuous live Internet feeds. Audionet claims to be the very first company broadcasting continuous web casts. Today, Audionet carries programming from over 85 television stations along with full length music current music releases and catalogs of past releases. Audionet has many users from other countries.
Shortly thereafter other companies jumped into broadcasting continuous live web casts with content from local television stations. Many of these companies offer programming from other countries which has been fairly successful. Countries such as China and India do not have the infrastructure to support cable so they are banking on the success of internet tv.
The main feature of internet tv is the interactive capabilities that will be available to subscribers. It will be different from cable programming because with cable, the subscribers are forced to accept the programming that the cable companies provide. With web tv, subscribers will be able to select the programming that they want. For example, the viewer will be able to watch programming based upon subject title or the actor’s name. The video will be overlaid with graphics, text and audio, so if the viewer chooses they will be able to look up information such as sports stats on the player or team that they are watching or can find out past acting credits of actor they are watching.
Online TV will be like TiVo because the viewer will be able to record programming and will have the ability to pause live action, fast-forward and rewind. If a subscriber can set it up so that they receive incoming e-mail and instant messages over the television. Their caller0ID can be displayed on the television too. The viewer will be able to watch Online TV as picture in picture, so they can surf the Internet or watch another channel while still watching the original programming in the small picture in picture on screen.
The possibilities of what web TV can offer subscribers are endless. If a subscriber is running late, with a cell phone or PDA he can call his I.P TV and tell it to record the baseball game that he won’t be home to see. If your are watching a cooking show, the viewer can dash off an email to the chef. Subscribers will be able to order the clothing that their favorite actors are wearing on TV, and all from the comfort of their living room sofa or recliner.
Web TV is currently in the testing phase in the United States. There are some kinks that need to be worked out as to how the delivery system works. To be a successful product, the broadband infrastructure must be in place to meet the demands of the subscriber. If a television show breaks up during transmission because the pipeline isn’t large enough to accept all of the data that needs to get through, the subscribers are not going to keep paying for the service.
European telephone and internet companies are offering IPTV subscriptions now, and the subscriber rate is rising. It is estimates that there will be over 50,000,000 households subscribing to IPTV by the year 2010. Will you be one of them?

Your Choice of Hughes Satellite Receivers From Directv
July 27, 2007 by admin · Leave a Comment
DirecTV has only one exclusive brand of satellite TV systems and components that they carry and that name is Hughes. Hughes is name brand top of the line satellite systems and components and this is just one of the many things that separate DirecTV from all of the other TV programming service providers.
While other service provider have chosen to provide their customers with the cheapest satellite systems that they could obtain in mass from overseas manufacturers, DirecTV has chosen to go with the well recognized Hughes reputation for quality and reliability. Every satellite TV programming service provider is going to give you a free satellite system when you sign on to an extended programming agreement now and the satellite TV system is yours to keep and own, just the same as if you had bought it.
This might seem like a fantastic deal on the surface, but if it is cheap electronics equipment that is prone to malfunction, then it not such a great deal after all. Once the limited warranty wears off then it is your baby to repair or replace and if you do neither, then you are stuck paying for a programming package that you can’t watch.
Going with the recognized Hughes name assures you that your system and receiver or receivers are going to be there for you for years to come. DirecTV’s base model no frills receiver that comes with their entry level programming package is called the Hughes Director. It is a high quality Hughes receiver, but it doesn’t have all the features that come on other Hughes receivers that DirecTV carries.
If you have an entry level programming package, you won’t need the custom menu feature or the programming search feature as well. One other feature option that the Hughes Director doesn’t have is DVR but you can get that on the next level up in Hughes receivers and there is no service charge for upgrading you receiver at any time.
The Hughes Executive model receiver is the next level up and it is equipped to handle programming packages with hundreds of channel options. The Executive model receiver comes loaded with great features and also has the option of Standard DVR or DVR Powered by TiVo. With DVR Powered by TiVo, instant slow motion replays are right at your finger tips. This is a fantastic feature for sports enthusiasts and TV also allows you to zip right past any annoying commercials that come on during your games.
With TiVo you also can stop any game or program and then restart it right where it left off when you return to your TV. The DVR in the Executive model receiver holds a full one-hundred hours of recording time and that adds up to be well over four solid days
DirecTV gives you the choice of two high definition Hughes receivers. One of them is a basic model just like the Hughes Director only its high definition. The other high definition receiver is just like the Hughes Executive model receiver and has all of the same features and options. They both receive both standard and high definition programming and it also holds a total of one-hundred and twenty-five hours of recoded programming.

TiVo or Media Center?
July 22, 2007 by admin · Leave a Comment
With current technology the VCR is rapidly becoming obsolete. Just take a look in the electronics stores; you’ll generally find a very small selection of basic VCRs and much more of a selection of DVD players and TiVos.
Each has its place but today I’m talking about TiVo and Windows Media Center. These two each let you record and watch television but there are some definite differences.
The wonderful thing about both programs is that you can be recording and watching a program at the same time. If you have dual tuners you may even be able to watch one channel while recording another. It all depends on your setup.
Of course, one of the favorite features of each program is the ability to fast forward through the commercials. This knocks off a big chunk of TV watching time, which is just wonderful.
TiVo is designed for watching television while Media Center is a program added to a computer that is designed for much more. The one that is better for you depends on your needs.
I personally prefer TiVos interface. When using it I find it to be more intuitive and better planned for a television screen. In particular I find setting priorities easier on TiVo – which can be important when you want it to choose automatically between overlapping programs.
Media Center can be used just on your computer or you can set things up to work on your television. I haven’t yet tried the Vista version of Media Center, in which I understand improvements have been made. It can’t be easy trying to program an interface that works both on a large television screen or on a small window on a computer.
That difference is where many of the problems with Media Center have tended to come in. Buttons can look absurdly large on a television but be nicely sized on a computer.
One little feature I love on TiVo is the reaction time when you’re rewinding or fast forwarding. It jumps back just a little so that you can hit play when you know you’re at the end of the commercials. The step back is just about perfect to put you at exactly when the show started back up from the commercials.
In each case you can decide to record an entire series. You can even decide whether you want all episodes recorded or just the new ones. This is really wonderful for those times that you miss that your favorite show is playing on a different day than usual. This feature can’t do anything about those times when a program is unexpectedly moved, but for regularly scheduled schedule changes it’s wonderful.
You either love or hate TiVo’s habit of recording shows it thinks you might like. These are deleted before the programs you chose to record are deleted, but the feature drives some people nuts. Fortunately, if you hate it the feature can be turned off.
Pricewise, the better one depends on what you’re shopping for. Media Center comes as a part of a computer and is more expensive if you don’t want it as a computer. TiVo generally costs far less. However Media Center does not require a subscription and TiVo does.
For watching television I really feel TiVo is superior. It is designed strictly for that and so it does the job extremely well. Media Center as an add on to control your television, music, pictures, etc. on a computer just can’t beat it at that game. TiVo also doesn’t have to worry about viruses and other computer hazards.

A Better Television Experience With Directv
July 19, 2007 by admin · Leave a Comment
Now that DirecTV also offers services like TiVo, High Definition Television (or HD TV), and the Digital Video Recorder (or popularly known as the DVR), you can be sure that changing your service to DirecTV will be an upgrade from whatever you have now. Even if you have all of the benefits of all of the new television technology (such as TiVo, HD TV, and the DVR) on a different satellite provider now, you can almost be sure that with DirecTV you will get all of that and a programming package that suits you even better for what will most likely be a much lower price. It is pretty incredible how inexpensive all of the modern home entertainment equipment has become, at least with DirecTV.
DirecTV offers programming packages for everyone. DirecTV’s programming packages come in such a wide variety that you will be sure to find a programming package that suits your personal entertainment wants and needs to the T. With many satellite providers, one of the most common problem is that even though you get a very large package of channels, most of the channels hold no interest for you and end up never being watched. Because you can pick between so many programming package options through DirecTV, you will have a much better chance at getting a package that you will be able to enjoy from the first to last channel.
If you are still watching cable, it can safely be assumed that you have not switched over to satellite TV because of the price. Now with DirecTV you will be able to get all of the modern benefits of switching to a satellite TV provider all at a price that you can afford. Even with such modern devices as TiVo (you know the system that allows you to pause and rewind live television as it is being aired) and the Digital Video Recorder, you can still get a DirecTV package that actually has a comparable price to what you are paying now with a cable provider.
On cable TV the only type of “parental control” available would be the television rating system. This system includes the ratings such as “TV-14” and “TV-Ma”. This does not actually block your child from watching these programs in any way however, and in most cases it is just used by the child to find the programs with content in them. This of course undermines the entire reason behind the rating system. Unfortunately, the combination of a child’s curiosity and his or her technological inclination can be a recipe for disaster. This problem is actually all but solved with parental controls from DirecTV. With the parental controls offered through DirecTV you will actually be able to block entire channels or shows either permanently or at certain times of day. And since children have a keen way of getting around things like parental controls, the parental controls offered by DirecTV have a very cleverly done password protection design. Thus it is ensured that what you lock, your child will not be able to see. If you would like to learn more about the parental controls or programming packages offered by DirecTV take a peek at the DirecTV website. You will be glad you did!
